All analogue...

Some more sounds from my new album - hope to have finished recording it within a few weeks! This one features some all analogue recording tricks - we recorded some grand piano away from the studio, to 1/4" tape, then transferred it to the 2" master tape, perfectly in sync - enjoy! The song is called "Ought To".

Instrumental lap steel album in the making

Fred Kinbom is currently preparing to record a new album of lap steel instrumentals (at least that is what seems to be taking shape so far) in a snowy, rural location outside Stockholm, Sweden. Watch this space for news as this project progresses (and join the mailing list and/or "like" the facebook page here to receive news updates). In the meantime, here is one of the instrumentals shortlisted for the new album, from a gig in Nijmegen, the Netherlands last October:

Gurrumul

Over the past months, Fred has had the pleasure and privilege to play with award-winning Aboriginal Australian artist Gurrumul - at the Barbican Hall in London, UK, in Zürich, Switzerland and most recently in Australia. Some photos from the shows in Canberra and Sydney have been added to the photo gallery here on the website.

KinboM, not KinboRN

It seems the Dutch promotor of the Sarah Blasko tour has misspelt my surname, so for the shows in Rotterdam, Nijmegen, Utrecht and Amsterdam, I was billed as Fred KinboRN, rather than KinboM. An easily made mistake, as "rn" looks similar to "m" in lower case lettering. At the Amsterdam show the other night, an audience member remarked that he could not find much info on the net for Fred KinboRN. So, for the people googling "Fred KinboRN", I will type this misspelt surname here a few times, so that they may end up here on the Fred KinboM website: Fred Kinborn, Fred Kinborn, Fred Kinborn, Fred Kinborn, Kinborn, Kinborn, Kinborn, KINBORN! ;-)

Photos from the UK/European tour

The tour supporting Sarah Blasko is going great - the audiences have been amazing! Just about to go and soundcheck for the second show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. I have uploaded some photos from the tour (including some great ones from the Paradijskerk in Rotterdam - a beautiful venue) and more will be added as it goes along - the photos can be found here or on my facebook page.

All the best, Fred.

Many a Man / Igelkott single - new download!

"Many a Man" - a brand new recording by the Fred Kinbom Trio, backed by a previously unreleased version of "Igelkott" (with some beautiful fiddle playing by Nick Pynn) is released today to raise money for a good friend who had a motorcycle accident last week. Thankfully he is alive and will recover eventually, but he has broken his right leg in four places and also his left hand. He is a self-employed tradesman and he will not be able to work for 6 months at least. So, we thought that "every little helps", and Jim, Sam and I recorded "Many a Man" on Tuesday night, and have now made it available as a digital download, to raise some money to help my friend out. My sister Anna Kinbom made the artwork. The two-track single costs only £1 and all proceeds will go to my friend, to make at least a small but positive difference in his unfortunate and difficult situation.

Many a Man

To buy the single, please go to the "Shop" page and click on the PayPal button there. The two songs will be e-mailed to your PayPal registered e-mail, or any other e-mail address you wish (just mention it as a note with the payment). Many thanks for your support! A trailer video:

Radio show on-air and online

Today I had the pleasure to be a guest on Mr. & Mr. Finn's show on Radio Reverb, playing a few tunes live, previewing a couple of tracks from my upcoming album, chatting to the Finns and selecting some of my favourite tunes from other artists.

This hour-long show will be broadcast on Monday 15 June at 14:00 UK time, on 97.2 FM locally and at www.radioreverb.com worldwide. (If you miss it on Monday the show will be re-broadcast on Saturday 20 June at 07:00 UK time).

A new video (lap sliding on a frozen lake)

Here is a video of my tune "Isolation Song", recorded in Stockholm, Sweden in February in an all-analogue studio with French artist Marjolaine on accordion and backing vocals (and my brother Valter on percussion and Sebastian Berghult on double bass).

(Click on the "HD" or "HQ" youtube option for better sound and image quality). I hope you will enjoy it! Fred

Another album preview

Hi folks! Last weekend I tried out an old composition of mine called "Dusk Dawn" (written on piano back in 2005) on my baritone Weissenborn - I recorded it (added some electric lap steel too), uploaded it to youtube (along with a little picture slideshow) to see what people thought of it. The response has been very positive so it will definitely go on the album. :-) Here it is (an unmastered rough mix):

I hope you will enjoy it! Fred

Video of new tune from gig last night

Just wanted to share a song that will be on my upcoming album from a very enjoyable gig last night in Brighton with The Adventurists. We all got together the night before the gig, and learned a couple of each others tunes - it all felt really fresh and was a lot of fun! The tune is called "Nattlunk".

New/old tune - your opinion?

This weekend I listened to some recordings of songs I wrote for my old band on "normal" guitar, before I started playing lap steel. I tried out one tune called "Not Tonight" on my baritone Weissenborn, and made a recording/youtube video to see what people think of it. I am considering including it on the album I'm making, and I would love to hear what you think of it. Here is the video:

Album update and preview

Well, my album recordings are taking longer than planned - it will probably not be ready until February or something like that. But I thought I'd show some samples of the album-in-progress here, so I have added a rough mix of the tune "The Jolly Baker of Aachen" on the music page, recorded last month with Sam Walker on drums. Comments and feedback would be much appreciated - I will leave it there for a month or so and then add new tunes up until when the album is ready.

New website and album in the making

Welcome to my new website! I will make some design changes here in the future when time allows but for now, at least I have a home!

I am currently recording my first lap sliding full-length CD, called "Hedgehogs & Elephants". A couple of tracks done so far, plenty of work left to do. I hope to have it ready by December. Please sign up for the mailing list and/or check back here every now and then for news on this. It will be for sale here on this site when it's available.

All the best, Fred
